Interdependence

July 2019

Everyone here in the United States will soon be celebrating Independence Day. We often celebrate with parties, picnics, great food, and fireworks. Then, on July 5th, Dr. Linda Bark likes to celebrate what she calls “Interdependence Day”; a day to celebrate connection, collaboration, and working together to form the whole. To be clear, it’s not about celebrating independence OR interdependence, but about coming from an integral perspective and celebrating both. As social beings, we have a desire to connect with each other, make sure each other is safe, and offer companionship. We also have a drive to figure things out on our own, carve out our own paths, and express ourselves as individuals.By embracing all these different aspects (that at first might appear at odds), we can function as a larger group while being authentic, respected, respectful, and kind. This year, we’ve taken Interdependence Day a step further and are focusing on what we can do to support and encourage collaboration. Dr. Linda Bark and her new colleague Licia Berry from Daughters of Earth are teaching a course on collaboration this summer. (Collaboration is actually one of the professional competencies for nurses too!) Learn more about our new course here

If you are in the United States, we hope you have a fabulous Independence Day, and we hope everyone (no matter where you are in the world) will have a great time celebrating Interdependence Day in whatever form your choose!
