How to Narrow In on Your Niche

July 2023

In last month's newsletter we talked about how to develop your coaching brand by focusing on your niche. Narrowing in on your niche seems to be one of the most difficult questions to answer for our coaches, so we thought it was important to expand on the topic this month.

Here are some tips for how to narrow in on your specific niche:

  • Identify your target audience: Determine the specific group of people you want to serve as a coach. Think about their demographics, interests, challenges, and goals. Ask yourself who would benefit the most from your coaching services and who you feel motivated to work with. Find podcasts and blogs focused on this target group, and listen for what they face and how you as a coach can help them.

  • Competitor analysis: Research other coaches who are operating in your potential niche. Study their websites, social media profiles, and any content they have produced. Pay attention to the services they offer, their target audience, and the unique approaches they take. This analysis will provide insights into the existing market and help you identify gaps or opportunities.

  • Surveys and interviews: Conduct surveys or interviews with individuals who could potentially be your clients. Ask them about their needs, pain points, and what they are looking for in a coach. This primary research will give you direct feedback and help you understand your target audience's perspective.

  • Online forums and communities: Engage in relevant online forums, groups, or communities where your target audience gathers. Observe the discussions, challenges, and questions that arise frequently. This will provide you with a deeper understanding of their needs and the common issues they face.

  • Experiment and gather feedback: Once you have narrowed down your potential niche(s), consider offering your coaching services on a smaller scale to a select group of clients. This will allow you to test the waters and gather feedback from real clients. Their input will help you refine your niche and adjust your offerings based on their specific needs.

Remember, niche selection is an iterative process, and it may take time to find the perfect fit. Stay open to feedback and be willing to adapt as you learn more about your target audience and your own coaching style.
