Multiple Perspectives

December 2016

In our Mission and Vision statements for Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy, we talk about multiple perspectives and how this will help create a different and better world. Well, what do we mean by “multiple perspectives”? And how would that make a better world?

It’s about looking at something from different angles, viewpoints, windows, or glasses, where each person makes an effort to see and understand things in more than one way. When we talk about this in terms of the “Integral”, imagine looking through a kaleidoscope to see it all – at once. It doesn’t necessarily mean we personally adopt everything, but that we can see where another person is coming from, and make room for those additional (nonviolent) perspectives in our own frame of reference. Let’s consider the holidays as an example. We have our logical/thinking perspectives that make lists, set budgets, looks at dates, menus, and presents for each kid, grandparent, relative, etc. Then, we have our different traditions, rituals, beliefs, meanings, feelings, and emotions to consider. For example, when we say “the holidays” are we talking about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali or something else? Are the holidays a happy or sad time for people? Or both? What different rituals do we take part in? And how does that affect us and how we interact with each other? Do we want to splurge and throw caution to the wind, or dial it back and be more reserved this holiday season?

Acknowledging the viewpoints of others without judgement helps us not only during the holidays, but during these times of cultural shift and great change on this planet. It can stop the argumentative and violent language that can lead to unnecessary conflict and hard feelings – on micro and macro levels. We wish you the very best this month as you experiment with seeing “multiple perspectives” and the difference it can make in your experience of this holiday season, and your life.

Warm Regards,
