One Coach’s Story

by Marian Long

Maybe you can relate to this: of the many workshops and presentations I’ve attended over the years, there are a few sets of handouts that stand out and that I’ve specifically saved for future reference. For me, one of those is from an American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) conference several years ago — a workshop by Dr. Linda Bark. It was experiential, fun, and over too soon, but I came away with a valuable packet of paper that held my vision, dreams and plans for the future. A year or two later, I encountered Linda at another AHNA conference. I recognized her immediately, and told her how excited I was that I was planning to attend another of her workshops that day. This second workshop was about Nurse Coaching — a phrase which caught my ear the very first time I heard it. It made so much immediate sense. By the end of that conference, I’d signed on to Linda’sBark Coaching Institute training, now known as Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy. My decision was made even easier because I was attending that conference in a mild state of shock. The Holistic Clinical Practice Coordinator position that I’d held since 2001 in a small rural hospital in Michigan had been eliminated several years before bythe larger corporation who owned the hospital, and my subsequent Education Specialist position had just been eliminated as well, a week before the conference. So I was out of a job, and ready for something new. I soon realized that coaching was my “portable future” – something I could learn and make my own, and take with me wherever my future unfolded. It was easy to broaden my passion for holistic nursing and health to embrace coaching, with all of my 30+ years of nursing experience and 60+ years of life informing my practice. It was a perfect bridge during my transition time, and the transformations I saw in myself and others were meaningful and gratifying. Over time as my practice and experiences unfolded, I became more involved with Wisdom of the Whole as an Instructor, Student Advisor, consultant, and feel privileged to see similar transformations in fledgling coaches as they blossom fully into their inner wisdom and talents.

I believe that now, more than ever, the energy of the Universe supports self-reflection, insights and empowerment, and a heightened awareness and consciousness that enable humans to reach potentials previously unavailable – in Gebser’s Structure of Consciousness Framework, it would be the Manifestation of the Integral. Since I am no longer in clinical nursing, my current favorite niche is working with clients who are sensing, embracing and/or needing support with this exciting shift. Recent clients have totally revamped their careers, reframed old stories, and gained clarity about previously underused gifts like empathic awareness. I find clients through word of mouth, women’s groups and yoga classes, and would like to broaden into aging and end-of-life coaching and perhaps even become an RN coach for patients needing guidance with legal medical cannabis in the future. There are many possibilities!

I am so grateful for the integrity, joyousness and depth that infuses the Wisdom of the Whole culture and training, and the richness and meaning that has been added to this stage of my journey. Hoping you are experiencing it too!
